Philip Whitebay

Phil Whitebay, originally from Cedar Grove, NJ, has been a resident of Highland for over 40 years. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. After serving his country for four years in the Navy, much of his career was spent in manufacturing. Throughout his life he has remained interested in the arts, experimenting with a variety of mediums including photography, stained glass, lampwork beads and jewelry, painting, stick figures, bread boards, bowls, wooden utensils and most recently furniture.

I most enjoy trying new ways of expressing myself so I work in many different mediums. My work in wood leads me to use the unseen grain of the wood to show what no one sees until we look inside. Sometimes the wood says table, sometimes it says bowl or breadboard. The branch in the wood pile may say to me it’s not just a stick but really a jazz dancer, surfer, or lumberjack, you just have to look and imagine. That’s the fun.
